Prayers, seminar for Beng Hock’s first death anniversary

By Neville Spykerman July 07, 2010

SHAH ALAM, July 7 — Special prayers and a seminar will be held by DAP to mark the one year anniversary of political aide Teoh Beng Hock’s mysterious death on July 16.

DAP National Socialist Youth secretary Loh Chee Heng said the prayers will be held at 10am outside Plaza Masalam, where Teoh was questioned overnight by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) last July 15 and later found dead a day later.

The Selangor MACC was based on the 14th floor of the building but shifted out months after the death of the 30-year-old political aide, ostensibly to serve the public better.

Loh said Teoh’s parents, former superior Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, and Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching will be attending the prayers.

Later the same night, a seminar will be held at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall to explain developments in Teoh’s case, which is the subject of an on-going inquest.

Top DAP leaders including Ipoh Timur MP Lim Kit Siang, Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai, and Puchong MP Gobing Singh Deo, who is also the Teoh family’s lawyer, are scheduled to speak at the seminar that starts at 8pm.

The death of the former journalist, who was questioned as a witness in MACC’s investigations into the alleged misused of state allocations, is still shrouded in mystery.

Police initially classified the case as sudden death, indicating that Teoh had jump to his death.

But the government was forced to hold an inquest to determine if there was foul play, following widespread public disbelief and anger.

His family is also disputing official accounts and have pointed out that Teoh was due to marry his pregnant girlfriend the day he was found dead.

A Royal Commission is also supposed to investigate if Teoh’s human rights were violated while he was questioned.

But the Commission will only begin their probe at the conclusion of the inquest.

On July 17, more prayers are planned at Teoh’s final resting place at the Nirvana Memorial Park in Semenyih between 8am and 10am.

“Invitations have been sent out to associations and non-government organisations to send representatives,” Loh said.

Malaysian Said NO to Nuclear P!

21 Mac 2011

Y.B. DATO' SRI PETER CHIN FAH KUI
Menteri Tenaga, Teknologi Hijau dan Air,
Kementerian Tenaga, Teknologi Hijau dan Air,
Aras 6, Blok E4/5, Parcel E,
Pusat Pentadbiran Kerajaan Persekutuan,
62668 PUTRAJAYA.

Sekian,

“CEKAP, AKAUNTABILITI DAN TELUS”
“BERKHIDMAT UNTUK NEGARA”

MRT: RICH SAY NO; The Poor Welcome

Rich say don’t need MRT, but poor welcome it
Malaysia Insider 17.2.2011
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 — Wealthy residents have dismissed the need for the Klang Valley mass rapid transit (MRT) system, unlike low-income earners who hailed it for its convenience.
Damansara Heights residents’ association president Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Abd Rahaman said his neighbours would likely not use the MRT as they preferred to drive their luxury cars.
“They’ll still go on their Jaguars,” Abdul Aziz told The Malaysian Insider recently.
“People in our area will not use this (the MRT). People from other areas... pass through our area to go to town. That makes the whole place jammed (already),” he added.
Abdul Aziz also pointed out that land was scarce in the affluent neighbourhood, which counts ministers, tycoons and top civil servants as among its residents.
“[There is] no more land in our area. The whole place will be congested,” said Abdul Aziz, a one-time managing director of flag carrier Malaysia Airlines.
“So we want to know exactly where is it and how are they going to plan to do it,” he added.
Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) residents’ association president Mohd Hatim Abdullah also said his neighbours were unlikely to use the TTDI station, which will be located near the TTDI market.
“People who live there already own four or five cars,” said Hatim.
He added that TTDI residents in Kuala Lumpur also objected to the 1Utama MRT station as it would likely worsen traffic congestion on the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP).
“The LDP now is very congested. During construction period, what will happen to the traffic?” he asked.
“They (the MRT stations) are both at our entry and exit points,” he added.
Hatim pointed out that the proposed location of the 1Utama station was on TTDI land next to the LDP headed towards Kuala Lumpur.
He said TTDI residents wanted the 1Utama station to be moved to a more suitable location nearby, such as the Bandar Utama golf driving range.
The driving range is located behind the 1Utama shopping mall in Petaling Jaya.
“The driving range is perfect,” said Hatim, pointing out that it was larger than the current proposed location.
The RM36.6 billion Klang Valley MRT project will have 35 stations along its first line that stretches 51km from Sungai Buloh to Kajang with four rail interchanges, according to documents released in the project website.
Eight stations between KL Sentral and Maluri will be underground as 9.5km of the Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) line will be built under the capital city.
Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) CEO Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal has reportedly said that the cost of underground works would be five to 10 times higher on a per km basis if the line were to go underground, depending on geological conditions.
Groundworks for the SBK line is due to start this July 16 and will be completed in 2016.
There are two other proposed lines under the MRT.
Hatim also suggested that the TTDI station be relocated to Damansara Uptown, a commercial area.
“It can serve Taman Tun, Tropicana shopping centre, Uptown, DJ (Damansara Jaya), DU (Damansara Utama), (and) Damansara Kim. That area’s perfect,” said Hatim.
Sunway Damansara residents said The Curve MRT station would mar the aesthetic image of their neighbourhood in Petaling Jaya.
“If you look at it, Sunway Damansara and the surrounding areas, Mutiara Damansara, are basically hot market areas,” said Sunway Damansara residents’ association president Winslow Wong.
“With the massive columns to support the MRT line, it’s not going to contribute to the aesthetic value,” he added.
Wong pointed out that the MRT station would cause massive traffic jams on Persiaran Surian, which is already congested during peak hours.
“Persiaran Surian is already very narrow with condominiums on both sides, especially nearer to The Curve,” said Wong.
An environmental impact assessment (EIA) report by the project’s environmental consultant ERE Consulting Group warned that significant traffic congestion would affect Persiaran Surian, the LDP and Jalan Semantan in Damansara Heights.
Bandar Utama residents similarly expressed concerns about traffic congestion that may potentially be caused by the 1 Utama and The Curve MRT stations.
“We are worried about the traffic,” said Bandar Utama residents’ association chairman Lim See Meng.
“The jam will be... backed up all the way to DU,” he said.
Low income-owners like the residents of Kampung Sungai Balak in Kajang, however, welcomed Malaysia’s largest infrastructure project.
“If the project does not affect our houses, we have no problem,” said village head Mohd Tahir Salleh.
The EIA report released on Monday said Kampung Sungai Balak residents may be forced out of their homes, which will be the third time they are affected by land acquisition.
But Tahir said the public display of the alignment showed that the proposed Taman Mesra MRT station avoided the village.
“It involves empty landlots... and goes through old roads,” said Tahir.
Batu 11 Cheras residents also supported the MRT project.
“It is very convenient for our area. So far, no complaints,” said Batu 11 Cheras village head Alex Neo.
Affluent neighbourhoods in other countries have similarly opposed big-ticket development projects that are proposed near them, using initiatives which are termed “Not In My Backyard” (NIMBY).
NIMBY protests reportedly stopped the construction of a railway line from Glasgow Central to East Kilbride in Scotland in 1989. The proposal had involved tunnelling under residents’ back gardens.
The MRT is an entry-point project identified for the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley National Key Economic Area under the Economic Transformation Programme.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said last December that the implementation of the project is expected to generate a gross national income (GNI) of between RM3 billion and RM4 billion beginning in 2011 until 2020.
He had said that between RM8 billion and RM12 billion was expected to be generated in terms of spin-offs from the construction of the MRT project.
The proposed alignment map for the SBK line is up for public viewing until May 14 at seven locations across the city.
They are Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Petaling Jaya City Council, Shah Alam City Council, Selayang Municipal Council, Kajang Municipal Council as well as the Bangsar LRT station and the SPAD office in Menara Dayabumi.
The public can provide their feedback on the project via email to feedback@kvmrt.com.my or through the SPAD toll free line at 1-800-82-6868.
The detailed environmental assessment impact report has been uploaded for public viewing at the Department of Environment’s website.

Selangor likely to pick doc for DBKL advisory board
By BAVANI M and PRIYA MENON
metro@thestar.com.my Friday March 11, 2011
A DOCTOR, who is a well respected figure in the community, is expected to represent Selangor in the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Advisory Board.
His name has been submitted by the Selangor government for the Sultan of Selangor’s approval. The rules and regulations that state the board must have 15 members, with the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry, the Finance Ministry and the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister’s Depart-ment having one representative each and the Selangor government having two.
The term of the previous two Selangor members on the board expired last May 31.
A source said many were also disappointed with Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim for not standing firm on his decision to maintain the original names.
Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai said the Federal Territory DAP state committee had a right to nominate their own people on the board and that they were adamant that his political secretary Loh Chee Heng was picked.
Tan said Loh, who was the former Federal Territory DAP state secretary, had the support of the Selangor DAP state committee as well.
“They believe they need someone like Loh who has worked with DBKL and is familiar with the issues in Kuala Lumpur.
“If the mentri besar thinks a replacement should be found then he should discuss this with our state committee.
“He can choose to replace the PKR candidate if he wants too, that is his prerogative.
“But when it comes to the DAP, let us decide for our slot,” Tan said.
Tan was commenting on the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s decree that a professional with no political leanings represent Selangor on the DBKL advisory board.
He said choosing someone with no political background might not be the best option because he or she would not have the people’s interest at heart.

Palace rejects Pakatan candidates shortlisted for advisory boardBy BAVANI M bavanim@thestar.com.my Metro (Star npps)10.3.2011
Home > Metro > Central Thursday March 10, 2011

ATEMPTS by Pakatan Rakyat to finally have representation in the Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s Advisory Board hit a snag when the two candidates shortlisted by the Selangor government were rejected by the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
According to a reliable source close to Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, the Sultan did not want political appointees to represent Selangor, but instead wanted qualified professionals with the interest of the people at heart.
The source said this was the reason why there had been a delay in the appointment of Selangor appointees on the City Hall Advisory board.
The previous two Selangor appointees’ term on the board had expired last May 31.
Apparently the two candidates who were selected are affiliated to the DAP and PKR.
“The Sultan was firm on this matter and wanted only qualified individuals to sit on the board. He had requested the Mentri Besar to submit new names,’’ said the source, adding that heeding the Sultan’s request, Khalid had since withdrawn the original candidates and have submitted a new name to the Sultan.
When contacted, the Sultan’s private sec¬retary Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani confirmed that the Mentri Besar’s office had submitted the name of a new candidate in accordance with the Sultan’s wishes of having only qualified professional candidates to represent Selangor.
According to the Rules and Regulations of the Advisory Board of the City of Kuala Lumpur 1989: the board must have 15 members, with the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry, the Finance Ministry, and the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department having one representative each, and the Selangor state government having two representatives.
The remaining members must be individuals with knowledge on local government issues, professionals with expertise on commerce or industry to represent the needs and interest of the local community.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that DAP is standing firm on its decision to have Loh Chee Heng, who is Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai’s political secretary to sit on the board.
Loh, who was the former Federal Territory DAP state secretary was picked for his strong grassroots support.
“Loh is an excellent candidate for the board; he has vast experience in community service with local government knowledge.
“He is a resident of Selangor and can speak several languages,’’ said Tan.
“His political background is irrelevant as the current members of the DBKL board are political appointees from Umno, MCA, MIC and Gerakan anyway. I think what is important here is performance and Loh has proven that he is more than capable,’’ added Tan.
He also said the matter had been delayed too long as the appointment of Selangor reps should have been done last June.
“Even though Pakatan government took over Selangor in March 2008, we allowed the Selangor reps from the previous BN government to stay on despite having the right to replace them, “ he added.
When asked to comment on the delay of appointments recently, Khalid confirmed there was a delay, but added a suitable candidate had been selected and an announcement will be made soon.
“As to the other candidate, we have to look at it very seriously because there must be a consensus in regards to representation.
“The person must be politically affiliated to the PR government and professionally respected too,’’ said Khalid.
The said candidate will be recommended to the Selangor Sultan for his endorsement at the end of the month.
DBKL advisory board members are appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the recommendation of the prime minister as stipulated in the Federal Capital Act 1960.
It is no secret that Selangor has been wanting to get on the board as it would enable the Pakatan-led government of Selangor to be represented on the board the first time in 30 years.
The current advisory board members

1) Datuk Bakaruddin Othman - Federal Territories Ministry

Selangor may replace reps on DBKL board
By BAVANI M Thursday February 12, 2009 Star Metro

ALTHOUGH the remaining six members of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) advisory board are expected to be political appointees from Umno, MCA, Gerakan and MIC, there is still the possibility of the opposition getting representation on the board.
According to the Rules and Regulations of the Advisory Board of the City of Kuala Lumpur 1989, the board must have 15 members, with the Federal Territories Ministry, the Finance Ministry, and the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department having one representative each, and the Selangor state government having two representatives.
The two current Selangor representatives – Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) chairman Datuk Setia Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa and lawyer Mah Hang Yew – were appointed by the previous Barisan Nasional state government and their terms will only expire next year.
If the Pakatan Rakyat-controlled state government were to replace the two incumbent Selangor representatives with its own nominated members, then the opposition alliance will get to be represented on the board.
According to local government expert Derek Fernandez, if Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim wants to replace the current representatives from Selangor although they have not completed their term, he has the legal right to do so.
“He has the power to do that. But the mentri besar would most probably allow the current representatives to serve out their term,’’ Derek said.
When contacted, Khalid confirmed that the state was reviewing the situation and will be getting feedback from the current Selangor appointees.
“If they are able to provide value-added representation to the state then we will retain them,’’ he said.
Khalid, who is also the Bandar Tun Razak MP, said that the best people to represent the residents of Kuala Lumpur were the 11 MPs elected by the people and it would be wise for the mayor to recognise that fact.
Khalid also acknowledged the fact that the advisory board had not been as effective as it should be as members only met six times a year and the mayor could override decisions made by the advisors.
During the first meeting with the Pakatan Rakyat MPs last month, mayor Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail rejected their request to be represented on the advisory board.
The current line-up has been criticised for being pro-development.
The recent appointment of Real Estate and Housing Developers Association (Rehda) chairman Datuk Michael Yam and architect Datuk Ruslan Khalid as members has drawn mixed reactions from city residents who feel that they were are pro-development and may have vested interests.
The current advisory board members are:
1) Datuk Bakaruddin Othman - Federal Territories Ministry
2) Datuk Abdul Rashid Maidin - Engineer
3) Datuk Setia Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa - Selangor Appointee
4) Tan Sri Mohamad Noor Abdul Rahim
5) Himmat Singh - Prime Minister’s Department (EPU)
6) Datuk Esa Mohamed - Town Planner
7) Mah Hang Yew - Lawyer (Selangor appointee)
8) Datuk Ruslan Khalid - Architect
9) Datuk Michael K.C Yam - Rehda

Rumusan
